AN AWARD-WINNING EMPLOYER, our people are TRUSTED AND RESPONSIBLE, believing in what they do with a clear commitment to contribute to transforming the world we live in and SHAPING A WORLD OF TRUST. Bureau Veritas operates in a wide range of sectors, delivering Testing, Inspection and Certification services to some of the world’s biggest household names. With MORE THAN 400,000 GLOBAL CLIENTS AND A REPUTATION FOR QUALITY, we are at the forefront of service and innovation. OUR PEOPLE ARE AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO, which is why we have worked hard to create a supportive and engaging working environment, which is OPEN AND INCLUSIVE and individuals are given the opportunity to FULFIL THEIR POTENTIAL and really LEAVE THEIR MARK. Founded in 1828, Bureau Veritas is an international group specialized in the inspection, analysis, audit, and certification of products, infrastructure (buildings, industrial sites, equipment, ships, etc.) and management systems in relation to regulatory or voluntary standards. Recognized and accredited by major national and international organizations, Bureau Veritas is present in 140 countries through a network of 900 offices and laboratories. It has more than 75,000 employees and a client base of more than 370,000. The marine branch is the historical activity of Bureau Veritas, and is still one of the main subdivisions. Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore develops its own rules for the classification of floating units and actively contributes to the development of common rules within IACS (International Association of Classification Societies). The topic of the internship is the development of a numerical method for the evaluation of the second-order wave loads in time domain. The second-order wave loads are used in the simulations of moored units in waves. The current procedure is based on pre-calculation of the second-order loads in frequency domain (QTF – Quadratic Transfer Functions) and their subsequent reconstruction in time domain. This procedure is not fully consistent because one part of the QTF’s requires the knowledge of the linear body motions, meaning that the part of the second-order loads will not be consistently updated during the simulation. This can become problematic for floating wind turbines, where wave frequency motions are modified due to non-linearities (such as quadratic damping or mooring forces). Calculating 2nd order loads directly in time domain would also allow accounting for additional non-linearities (Froude-Krylov and geometric ones to start with). The intern will thus develop a prototype allowing for calculation of 2nd order loads in time domain. The application case will be the low-frequency motions of a floating wind turbine. Reference paper is: B.Teng & Cong P.W., 2017.: “A novel decomposition of the quadratic transfer function (QTF) for the time-domain simulation of non-linear wave forces on floating bodies”, Applied Ocean Research 65. SCOPE OF WORK: * Theoretical considerations * Numerical developments * Verifications, comparisons and validation REQUIREMENTS: Open to candidates pursuing an engineering degree (Master degree equivalent in engineering school or university). * Strong background in marine hydrodynamics * Programing skills (Python, Fortran…) * Strong scientific interest Duration of the internship : 6 months with a beginning between February & May 2022 This internship is to be formalised through a formal agreement between the school/university, the student and the company.
