The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global
environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda,
promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of
sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as
an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The internship is with the Sustainable Tourism team at the United
Nations Environment Programme, Economy Division, Paris, France.
The UNEP internship is for six months:
* from April 1st, 2022, until September 30th, 2022
* or from September 26th, 2022, until March 24th, 2023.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work 35 hours, five
days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the
department or office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will
assist with the development of the communication and research
activities the Sustainable Tourism Programme. Daily responsibilities
may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the
internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
* Supporting the development of private sector engagement strategies,
including participation in technical expert groups and private sector
consultations
* Assisting the identification of capacity building needs and
opportunities for the tourism sector
* Supporting measurement and reporting from tourism businesses on
climate change and resource efficiency targets
* Supporting the implementation of the Transforming Tourism Value
Chains project in the Philippines and the Dominican Republic,
including participating in national roundtables, supporting alignment
of climate and circularity policies, and revising business cases and
sustainability reports
* Assisting in the development of presentations, newsletters, and
communication materials for advocating and promoting sustainable
tourism in international events, meetings, or conferences
* Supporting the project website update and the knowledge management
database of the related projects
* Assisting the organization of ministerial conferences, high-level
events (including the UN Climate Conference (COP 27) and capacity
building events on circularity, climate change, and sustainable
consumption and production
* Supporting the development of business cases, videos, and news by
liaising with key technical stakeholders (to be developed by partners
and communication experts)
* The intern will support the implementation of the following
projects:
‘Transforming Tourism Value Chains in Developing Countries and Small
Island Developing States (SIDS) to accelerate more resilient, resource
efficient, low carbon development’.
The overarching goal of this project is to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions and increase resource efficiency in three tourism value
chains: food and beverages, accommodation, and, collectively, in
meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE). The project
analyses the respective value chains, prepares policy recommendations,
and develops concrete action plans that will help reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and improve resource efficiency in at least 100 business
along the value chain. In addition, partners in the project will
develop a monitoring and reporting system that will enable countries
(Philippines, Dominican Republic, Mauritius, and Saint Lucia) to
account for their achievements under international agreements.
Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI)
The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative unites the tourism sector
behind a common vision to address the root causes of plastic
pollution. It enables businesses, governments, and other tourism
stakeholders to take concerted action, leading by example in the shift
towards circularity in the use of plastics. Developed by the
Sustainable Tourism Programme of the One Planet network, a
multi-stakeholder partnership to implement SDG 12 on Sustainable
Consumption and Production, the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative is
led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism
Organisation, in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or
equivalent) in tourism, environment management, political sciences,
sustainable development or related fields is required. A first-level
or advanced degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree, or
equivalent) in any fields of studies with two additional years of
relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced
university degree in the specified fields of studies.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations
Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or
skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations
Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is
required; and knowledge of French and Spanish are an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise
which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs
and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses
are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United
Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is
