VOTRE RÔLE ET VOS MISSIONS The AXA Group, world leader in Financial
Protection, supports and advises its individual and corporate
customers at every life stage, providing them with the products and
services that meet their insurance, personal protection, savings and
wealth management needs. Our areas of expertise are reflected in a
range of products and services adapted to the needs of each client in
three major business lines: property-casualty insurance, life &
savings, and asset management. In 2021, present in 54 countries, the
153,000 employees and distributors of AXA were committed to serving
105 million clients. AXA CORPORATE CENTER’S MAIN MISSIONS ARE TO:
Steer the entities in order to ensure the coherence of the strategies,
the consistency of the commercial approaches as well as the
optimization of the risks and results. Defining and coordinating Group
policies, different transversal projects and standards, identifying
and sharing best practices. Supporting the entities in order to help
them to grow, to develop their offer, their management and steering
standards as well as their risk management. The head office of AXA
Group (GIE AXA), based in La Défense, gathers the Group's corporate
activities. It coordinates the various entities according to the
Group's strategy and is responsible for managing international
projects. The headquarters is composed with over 1000 employees and is
distinguished by its strong international culture (45 nationalities).
TEAM PRESENTATION: The internship will be based at the AXA Group Risk
Management (GRM) department with strong interactions with AXA XL
entity. AXA GRM brings together multidisciplinary high-level teams
composed of actuaries, engineers, PhDs, and financial analysts, based
in Paris, Zurich and Madrid. The Natural Hazards Team of AXA GRM is
looking for an intern for 4 months who will be joining dynamic team of
15+ members team dedicated to the modelling and monitoring of the CAT
risks borne by the company. The position belongs to the GRM P&C CAT &
Reinsurance Risk department (19 FTEs) which is organized in four poles
(CAT Data & Analytics, R&D Modelling, Accumulation Management and
Reinsurance), the intern will work within the R&D Modelling team.
MISSIONS AND CONTEXT SPECIFIC TO THE MISSION: The European flood of
July 2021 raised many questions within governments, industry, and
research institutes. In particular, the insurance industry requires
solid understanding of the meteorological origins, the hydrological
response, the economic impacts, along with the probability of this
event, to estimate solvency requirements, set premiums on their
policies and assess required reinsurance. Current state-of-the-art
natural catastrophe risk assessment models may not be able to capture
this event adequately: either because the event is quite unique and
absent from current hydrometeorological datasets underlying these
models, or because models are calibrated against fewer extreme
historical records. At AXA, the R&D modelling team has been
investigating the use of Stochastic Weather Generators (SWG), a term
that encompasses a powerful family of methodologies aimed at
generating arbitrary long sequences of probable weather states; thus,
exploring the full range of possible outcomes for a specific variable
of interest such as precipitation, while trying to preserve the
physics and spatiotemporal structure of the hazard. The goal of the
internship is to better understand extreme events such as Bernd using
a SWG. To this end, the internship will be decomposed in two
interacting work packages. The first part of this internship is to
support current research led by the team on the applicability of SWG
to the modelling of extreme events. An emphasis will be put on
precipitation modelling at the European scale. The aim of the first
part would be to improve our knowledge of how well SWGs can be used to
better understand the probability and risk linked to events such as
Bernd. The expected methodology should allow to lengthen the rainfall
record by probabilistic temporal resampling and spatial transposition
of extreme convective storm events drawn from a catalogue of
historical storms. The second part of this internship will be to
investigate how well SWG simulated timeseries couple with hydrological
and hydraulic response, in particular in areas where the
meteorological conditions were much more severe than in any recorded
data, used for calibration of hydrological models. As a global
outcome, the work carried out during internship will deliver a
contribution to research work jointly undertaken by AXA and its
partners Deltares and Fathom, related to the modelling and
understanding of extreme flood risk in Europe. This research work will
constitute foundational material to the publication of a scientific
paper, to which the intern will contribute. VOTRE PROFIL EDUCATION: *
