TEAM PRESENTATION:
The internship will be based at the AXA Group Risk Management (GRM)
department.
AXA GRM brings together multidisciplinary high-level teams composed of
actuaries, engineers, PhDs and financial analysts, based in Paris,
Zurich and Madrid.
The Natural Hazards Team of AXA GRM is looking for an intern for 6
months who will be joining dynamic team of 15+ members team dedicated
to the modeling and monitoring of the CAT risks borne by the company.
The position belongs to the GRM P&C Natural Catastrophe & Reinsurance
Risk department (19 FTEs) which is organized in four poles (CAT Data &
Analytics, R&D Modeling, Accumulation Management and Reinsurance), the
intern will work within the R&D Modeling team.
MISSIONS AND CONTEXT SPECIFIC TO THE MISSION:
Climate-related risks are determined through an interplay between the
occurrence of climate hazards and their impact on the insurance
exposure portfolio assessed through its vulnerability to the hazardous
conditions. AXA has developed for several years now internal Natural
Hazards (NATHAZ) risks models to notably conduct in-depth climate risk
assessment. NATHAZ risks models are made of hazard, vulnerability and
financial modules. Hazard module is made of meteorological data to
define geographical distribution, occurrence frequency and intensity
of possible weather events. The vulnerability module made of
engineering expertise and claims data experience helps to assess the
expected damage from an event conditioned upon the exposure
characteristics and event intensity.
Climate change is affecting the probability of natural hazard
occurrence in terms of severity and/or frequency. Impacts of climate
change are driven not only by changes in climate conditions, but also
by changes in exposure and vulnerability.
The first and major objective of the internship will be to integrate
climate change signal into the hazard module of AXA internal NAT HAZ
models. Climate change signal will be studied based on major
scientific publications but also on CMIP6 climate model simulations
under several scenarios and for different time-horizon.
The second objective will be to study future evolution of the exposure
and vulnerability modules and assess their impacts and respective
contributions on future climate risks. These impacts will notably
include: more resilient building construction codes, spatial changes
in the exposure, mitigation and adaptation measures. This will help in
designing a forward-looking vulnerability module but will also be very
helpful in assessing efficiency of regional possible adaptation
measures.
The internship will focus on three major perils namely tropical
cyclones, drought and severe convective storms.
