BELL LABS SUMMER INTERN
Position: Intern
Duration: 5 months

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN AND CONTRIBUTE TO
The explosive data traffic growth urges telecommunication networks to
enhance data rate with lower price and low power consumption. The
photonic integration is a solution since it allows us to reduce size
and consumption as compared to discrete systems assembled from unitary
components. III-V semiconductors are ideal materials for photonic
integration thanks to their emitting properties induced by their
direct bandgap. In this context, InP photonics platform is the
historical scheme to fabricate components for telecommunications
applications. However, the silicon photonics platform challenges the
current InP-photonics platform because of its potential for low-cost
large-scale fabrication line. But silicon itself cannot constitute an
efficient emitting light-source due to its indirect bandgap.
Therefore, the integration of III-V onto Si allows us to combine costs
and means of fabrication offered by the Si industry with the III-V
emitting properties.
III-V integration on Si is being developed for more than 30 years
since the potential is huge. However, this integration is challenging
because of physical incompatibilities between III-V and Si materials.
Recently, a novel integration scheme by InP-seed-bonding and epitaxial
regrowth has emerged to benefit from the best offered by InP and Si
photonics.
Goal of the internship:
The development of new building blocks based on the integration by
seed-bonding and regrowth developed at III-V Lab represent a
challenging target. In particular, the development of regrowth to bury
laser structures in order to improve heat dissipation hence thermal
stability of our component is at stake. The intern will be trained on
the MOVPE growth reactor and to the characterization tools.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The intern should have strong knowledge on semiconductor physics and
on photonics. He/She should also have social skills to interact with
different departments of the lab.
