The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global
environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda,
promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of
sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as
an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The internship is for a minimum of three (3) months, with the
possibility of extension up to a maximum of six (6) months, depending
on the needs of the Unit.
The internship is for a duration of six (6) months
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of
a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and
Production Patterns (10YFP), adopted by the UN General Assembly, is a
key implementation mechanism for the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable
Development and its SDG 12, of which it is an integral part. The
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the Secretariat
of the 10YFP, working closely with Member States and other
stakeholders engaged in the One Planet network
(www.oneplanetnetwork.org) which supports the implementation of the
10YFP. The development, establishment and implementation of the 10YFP
has relied on the convening power and expertise of the United Nations.
Equally, United Nations agencies and programmes play a key role in the
achievement of SDG 12.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Secretariat for the 10 Year Framework of
Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), the
intern will assist in a variety of tasks relating to directly
supporting the office of the 10YFP Director. Contributing to internal
and external communications, logistics and project management for the
10YFP Secretariat and the One Planet Network, the Intern will
synthesize knowledge from the online platforms, meetings, and other
sources. Responsibilities may also include research support for policy
areas related to the different workstreams of the 10YFP Secretariat.
External support to the One Planet network programmes can include
supporting various projects and activities through communications
activities and logistical support. Duties may include, but are not
limited to:
* Support to the office of the 10YFP Director regarding
communications, logistics and task coordination: both internally and
externally.
* Notetaking and synthesizing of discussions between stakeholders of
the One Planet network
* Support specific activities of the 10YFP Secretariat through
research and levering existing networks
* Support the development of written content (substantive policy
briefs, statements, briefing notes) relevant to the One Planet
network.
* Support digital tasks activities such as stakeholder coordination,
social media engagement and database management
* Support communication activities through research and upkeep of
calendars and other tracking tools.
* Support the coordination of tasks related to the 10YFP Governance
body: One Planet Network Board
* Respond to ad hoc requests for support.
Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following
requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university
degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree
program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and
have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals
of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include
willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing
opinions and views.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations
Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or
skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Microsoft office package (desirable)
Experience drafting in English and synthesizing information
(qualitative and quantitative) and presenting in concise and relevant
manner (desirable)
Experience with digital media tools e.g. CMS, CRM, email marketing
platforms, Google Analytics, social media management platforms
(desirable)
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations
Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English
is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read,
write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of
"confident" in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise
which may be followed by competency-based interview.
